Drosophyllum lusitanicum- also known as the dewy pine - is literally in a genus of its own. This unusual carnivore unfurls long linear leaves that produce an aromatic mucilage. When mature, they produce clusters of bright yellow flowers capable of producing copious seed. These semi-annual/tender perennial plants can be a bit tricky for a novice grower, but Drosophyllum is extremely rewarding when grown properly.

Seedlings are approximately 3-6 months old and were germinated outdoors. They are packed in 3" pots in a mix comprised primarily of sand. This is to prevent disruption during travel and easy transplanting into a larger, permanent pot. Drosophyllum are susceptible to transplant shock. For best results, carefully transplant the entire sand "plug" into a hole in proper media in a terracotta pot at least 8" in size. This is easiest to achieve by protecting the seedling between your fingers in your dominant hand, inverting the pot using your other hand, and give it a quick shake to dislodge the plug.
